Dancing with Shadows: Embracing the Parts of You That Hide

In honor of Halloween, let's talk about shadows.

There’s a moment, right before dawn, when the world feels suspended between night and day. The shadows linger, clinging to the edges of the horizon, yet the light is on its way. This is where many of us stand, caught between the parts of ourselves we’ve tucked away and the brightness of who we are becoming.

We talk about healing as if it’s a tidy, step-by-step process—a ladder we climb. But here’s a little secret: healing is messy. It’s more like dancing through a thunderstorm, barefoot, splashing through puddles, and letting the rain cleanse all that sticks to us. It doesn’t always feel like light and love; sometimes it’s the deep, murky mud of old wounds pulling at your ankles, daring you to sink. But there’s magic in the mud, my friends.

Healing begins when we stop running from our shadows. You know, those hidden parts of ourselves that we’d rather not acknowledge—the anger that flares up, the sadness we try to bury, the fear that grips us in the dead of night. We think these shadows make us less whole, but in truth, they are as much a part of our light as the sunrise is of the day. To heal, we must dance with them, listen to their whispers, and invite them to share their wisdom.

There’s no shortcut. No special potion. (If only!) Instead, it’s about noticing. Feeling. Being present with the discomfort without judgment. When we bring mindfulness to these parts of ourselves, we offer them a space to speak. And believe me, they’ve been waiting to be heard for a long, long time. With each breath, we soften. We let go. We learn to hold our tenderest places with compassion, and in doing so, the shadows lose their power over us.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re fumbling in the dark, you’re not alone. I’ve been there. Kali’s destruction has torn through my life more than once, reminding me that sometimes we need the old walls to fall before we can see the stars. And oh, how brightly they shine after the storm! But here’s the thing—when the lightning strikes and the earth shakes beneath your feet, reach out. You don’t have to face the tempest alone. You’re not a lone warrior on a solitary path.

As a licensed therapist and transformational guide, I’m here to walk with you on this journey of self-discovery and healing. Whether you’re just beginning to face your shadows or have been working through them for some time, professional support can help you navigate the storm with more ease. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re ready to take the next step. Together, we’ll find the light waiting on the other side.
